In line with his long-standing advocacy to protect the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) at every stage of their journey, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Migrant Workers, filed Senate Bill No. 1776, also known as the National Reintegration Bill, on Monday, 9 February.
“We must focus on the needs of our fellow overseas Filipino workers. We should ensure that our offices remain open to provide immediate assistance to our OFWs and their families,” the senator said.
The proposed measure seeks to establish a comprehensive, institutionalized reintegration framework for returning OFWs and for those whose overseas employment contracts have ended.
Go emphasized that genuine concern for OFWs should not end when their work abroad concludes, but must extend to ensuring their smooth transition back into Philippine society through sustainable livelihood and employment opportunities.
Heroic sacrifices
“Our OFWs make many sacrifices. They are called modern-day heroes. That is why it is the government’s responsibility to be ready and proactive in assisting, especially in times of need,” Go said.
The bill further mandated the Department of Labor and Employment and the Department of Migrant Workers to plan and conduct regular job fairs in strategic locations nationwide.
These initiatives aim to directly link returning OFWs with employment opportunities that match their skills and overseas work experience.
With the world-class Filipino workforce, the bill also directs the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority to issue certifications or diplomas that acknowledge the education, training, and experience OFWs have acquired abroad.
“Let us work together and show compassion for our fellow Filipinos. Let us not neglect our OFWs,” the senator expressed.
