A critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle was safely returned to its natural habitat in the waters of Sarangani Bay on 14 February 2026, marking Valentine’s Day a day of love for the environment.

According to the Protected Area Management Office of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (PAMO-SBPS), the female turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is a critically endangered marine reptile renowned for its beautiful, ornate shell and specialized diet.

They added that the turtle was rescued on 2 February in Maasim, Sarangani Province, following a report from a community member, Arnel Baay.

After successful rehabilitation, the turtle was sent off on Valentine’s Day, turning the occasion into a cheerful celebration of hope, resilience, and love for the ocean and its wildlife.

PAMO-SBPS said that this is a gentle reminder that love is also found in protection and care for the natural world.

“As the turtle swam back beneath the waves, the message was simple: protecting marine life is a love that lasts not just on Valentine's Day, but every single day.”
