The Department of National Defense (DND) on Monday said the updated Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Defense reflects the Philippines’ push to deepen practical collaboration with Italy, particularly in long-term capability development and military interoperability.
“The signing of the renewed agreement is a concrete step towards strengthening bilateral defense relations and advancing practical cooperation,” DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong told reporters on Monday.
Philippine Foreign Affairs Maria Theresa Lazaro and Italian Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto formalized a renewed defense cooperation agreement on 14 February 2026, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany, marking what Manila described as a concrete step toward stronger bilateral defense relations.
Andolong added that the partnership is anchored on mutual respect and strategic trust, underscoring both countries’ shared commitment to enhancing defense capabilities and expanding coordination.
“Our efforts reflect a shared commitment to long-term capability development and greater interoperability, anchored on mutual respect and strategic trust.”
Andolong said the DND also welcomed Italy’s growing engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, saying it looks forward to sustained cooperation aimed at strengthening maritime security, promoting global stability, and advancing mutual interests.
