SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — Aiming to address the decline in visitor arrivals outside the surfing season, Governor Mario Eduardo C. Ortega has introduced a new economic roadmap designed to establish the province as a year-round tourism destination.
The plan seeks to actively create new market opportunities. Ortega said the provincial government will lead efforts to develop these markets to ensure consistent economic growth for local residents and stakeholders.
The governor said one key component of the strategy is the opening of the Campo Theater, which will host cultural shows and traditional performances. While Ortega noted the importance of the information technology sector in modernizing the province, he emphasized that showcasing local heritage will be the primary method for distinguishing La Union in international and domestic travel markets.
The provincial government is also prioritizing infrastructure and maritime development. Current projects include upgrades to the fish port in Santo Tomas and the promotion of recreational fishing and sports as tourist activities. Additionally, the governor highlighted the need to leverage La Union's proximity to regional landmarks like the Hundred Islands to attract more visitors.
He also revealed that future plans focus on the full-scale modernization of the San Fernando Port, a project that has received support from the national government. Ortega said this gateway is intended to serve as a major hub for both regional trade and tourism.
To complement these physical infrastructure projects, the province will increase its digital marketing efforts and social media presence to promote local products and maintain competitiveness throughout the year.
