GENERAL SANTOS CITY — The P2.3-billion redevelopment of the General Santos City public market is set to give one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs a modern facelift, reflecting a wider push to upgrade traditional markets in fast-growing regional cities.
The project, a partnership between the city government and Robinsons Land Corporation, will turn the central market into a “mallengke” — a hybrid space that blends the traditional market’s vibrancy with the infrastructure and amenities of a modern commercial complex.
For decades, the GenSan public market has been the main trading hub for agricultural and seafood products from South Cotabato, Sarangani, and nearby provinces, playing a key role in the city’s food supply and price setting. Business groups say that upgraded facilities, better sanitation, and improved logistics could make life easier for vendors and shoppers alike.
The General Santos City Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed the project, calling it a landmark development that could boost the city’s status as a regional trade hub, create jobs, and attract new businesses.
