Prized National University (NU) recruit Sam Cantada is tuning out the outside noise and high expectations of filling in the big shoes left by no less than three-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) Bella Belen.
Ready to bring the bite for the Lady Bulldogs’ three-peat bid in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament, Cantada is focused on playing her game rather than getting pressured by the unavoidable comparison with the decorated former NU ace.
“For me, it doesn’t really weigh that much since there’s no specific person tasked to take on the sole responsibility of that role in this team. All of us here can step up and play that role. Anyone can lead,” the high-leaping power hitter said.
“So, I don’t see it as a difficult task since we all share that responsibility,” she added.
A recruit from Adamson University, the Season 87 Girls MVP embraces the challenge of contributing on the offensive end as her firepower is needed following the departure of Belen and another prolific scorer in Alyssa Solomon.
Cantada believes Lady Bulldogs faithful will see a bolder and fiercer version of her as she tries to live up to her billing as the next big thing in the seniors ranks.
“I believe I’m fiercer since I’m being tested every training. Like, every tune-up (game) is a test for me. I’m the target (on offense and defense),” the 18-year-old rookie said.
“So, we’ll see in the game if I did overcome those tests. But I know I’m coming into this season stronger and braver than ever,” added the Alas Pilipinas Girls standout.
Cantada, who starred in the Lady Bulldogs’ conquests in the Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals and the Preseason Unity Cup, will get a baptism of fire on Sunday against University of Santo Tomas at the Mall of Asia Arena.
All eyes will be on her as well as on holdovers Vange Alinsug, setter Lams Lamina, Shaira Jardio, Arah Panique and Chams Maaya.
“We know it won’t be easy defending the title this season. Ate Bella and her batch left a very high standard to follow,” she said.
“But once we begin our campaign, we’ll be there for each other. And we know we can retain that crown and achieve a three-peat.”
