The Philippines has been named Best Retirement Destination in Asia at the TripZilla Excellence Awards 2025, a recognition seen to strengthen the country’s standing in the global retirement market.

The award was formally presented to the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) on 11 February, 2026 at the Le Parc Event Hall in Pasay City, coinciding with the agency’s 40th year of promoting the country as a second home for foreign retirees. PRA General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Roberto Z. Zozobrado, along with Deputy General Manager Atty. Maria Milagros R. Lisaca, received the recognition during the anniversary celebration.

In his remarks, Zozobrado said the award reflects more than international recognition.

“This recognition represents something deeper than a title. It reflects trust. It reflects experience. And most of all, it reflects people,” Mr. Zozobrado said.

“It affirms what we have always believed that the Philippines is not just a place to retire, but a place to truly belong.”

The accolade was determined through online voting participated in by more than 100,000 travelers across Southeast Asia, according to TripZilla. The result highlights the country’s appeal as a retirement hub known for its relatively low cost of living, tropical environment and English-speaking population.

TripZilla chief executive officer Winnie Tan said the winners reflect innovation in travel and hospitality.

“Our winners embody what it means to be trailblazers using innovation and creativity to craft experiences that leave lasting impressions on travellers. As we embrace an AI-driven future, one truth endures: travel must remain human. Technology should not replace connection, but amplify it making travel more meaningful, memorable, and inspiring,” Tan said.

Since its establishment in 1985, PRA has administered the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV), which grants long-term residency to qualified foreign nationals and former Filipinos. The program offers multiple options depending on age and financial capacity, allowing retirees to settle in major urban centers or in quieter provincial areas.

Over the past four decades, the agency has recorded more than 84,000 foreign retirees under the program. The largest groups come from China, South Korea, India, the United States, Taiwan, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Hong Kong. Many choose to reside in Metro Manila, Central Visayas and Central Luzon due to access to healthcare facilities, transport links and established expatriate communities.

Industry observers say the recognition could further boost interest in the country’s retirement visa program, supporting local real estate, healthcare and service sectors.

As it marks 40 years of operations, PRA said it intends to sustain efforts to position the Philippines as a competitive and welcoming retirement destination in Asia.
