The Philippine National Police is investigating a photo circulating online that shows a vlogger known as “Francis Leo Marcos” wearing a police uniform.
PNP information chief and spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said during a press briefing at Camp Crame on Wednesday that the vlogger may face charges for violating Article 179 of the Revised Penal Code.
The provision penalizes the unauthorized wearing of police uniforms or insignia with imprisonment of up to six months.
"Base sa initial na investigation na lumalabas ng PRO (Police Regional Office) 2, ang liability ay nasa nagsuot ng uniporme. Ang posibleng violation niya ay Revised Penal Code Article 179, ito ay ang illegal use of uniforms and insignias," Tuaño said.
Authorities are also tracing where the vlogger obtained the uniform.
Under Executive Order No. 297, establishments that illegally manufacture or sell police uniforms may face closure, confiscation of products, cancellation of licenses and fines.
National Police Commission Vice Chairman and Executive Officer Rafael Vicente Calinisan said they are also looking into the incident “in solidarity with the PNP.”
"I am directing our Legal Affairs Service (LAS) and our Inspection Monitoring and Investigation Service (IMIS) to coordinate with the PNP to file the appropriate charges and put a stop to this circus," Calinisan said.
Aside from the unauthorized use of police uniforms, the PNP reminded the public that presenting oneself as a police officer is a serious criminal offense punishable under the Revised Penal Code.
Tuaño urged the public to report individuals who misrepresent themselves as police officers, saying this helps protect communities from scams, fraud and potential harm.
