Philippine National Police chief Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said Friday that the organization is on the right track, citing a decline in focus crimes and improved community safety under his leadership.

Nartatez said focus crimes have gone down, indicating that strengthened crime prevention initiatives are helping communities stay safer and more engaged in maintaining public security. He added that intensified police operations targeting wanted persons, illegal drugs, smuggling, and loose firearms are producing tangible results on the ground.

“Ang aming latest data shows that Focus Crimes have decreased by 24% compared to the same period last year. This is an indicator that our strategies are working,” Nartatez said. “We will continue to listen to various sectors and act on their feedback to improve our services even further,” he added.

The PNP chief highlighted recent law enforcement gains, including the arrest of wanted persons, the dismantling of illegal drug networks, the interception of smuggled goods, and the recovery of loose firearms.

“Ang pagbaba ng focus crimes ay nagpapakita ng aming seryosong commitment sa pagseserbisyo at pagprotekta sa mamamayan,” he said.

Beyond operational gains, Nartatez underscored that internal reforms remain a top priority. Under the PNP Focused Agenda, continuing reforms aimed at professionalism, integrity, transparency, and responsive service are being implemented across all levels of the organization.

At the same time, he reiterated the PNP’s zero-tolerance policy against misconduct, stressing that accountability is non-negotiable.

Since Nartatez assumed office, the PNP has resolved 770 administrative cases. Of these, 278 personnel were dismissed, 44 demoted, and 163 suspended, while others faced restrictions on duties totaling 504 cases and withholding of privileges in 266 cases.

“These numbers show that our internal systems are working. It sends a clear message that no one is above the law, and we will hold accountable those who tarnish the badge,” he said.

Nartatez said strengthened internal disciplinary systems, faster case resolution, and stricter oversight are crucial to restoring and sustaining public trust.

“Hindi namin itinatago ang pagkukulang ng ilan, ngunit mas lalong hindi namin ito kinukunsinti. Accountability is part of reform,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of police visibility and partnerships with communities.

“Every barangay, every street deserves to feel the presence and effectiveness of the police. Sa tulong ng mamamayan, mas napapalakas natin ang laban kontra kriminalidad,” Nartatez said.

The PNP continues to encourage public cooperation through crime reporting, community participation, and constructive feedback.

“Trust is earned, not demanded, and we accept that challenge every single day,” he said.
