PLDT spoils De Guzman, Creamline reunion

Mark Escarlote

PLDT spoiled the much-awaited return of decorated setter Jia Morado-De Guzman with a dominating, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23, sweep of Creamline for a great start in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference Thursday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Savi Davison unleashed a monster triple-double of 26 points, 11 digs and 10 excellent receptions for the High Speed Hitters in a quick work of the Cool Smashers.

“I couldn’t have done it alone; everyone showed up today,” Davison said of her performance.

The Filipino-Canadian hammered 23 kills and accounted for three of PLDT’s eight kill blocks.

Kim Kianna Dy scored nine points, Jovelyn Prado added seven markers and Majoy Baron finished with six for the High Speed Hitters, who had 18 excellent sets from playmaker Kim Fajardo.

PLDT controlled the first two sets and was up by five in the third frame before Creamline made a blistering run to tie it at 17 following a service ace from returning Bernadeth Pons.

A Prado offspeed hit and back-to-back errors by the Cool Smashers gave the High Speed Hitters a 20-17 cushion. Creamline countered with a 6-3 rally to knot it again, 23-23.

Davison brought order back with a powerful smash on her third consecutive attempt before Prado timed Tots Carlos’ attack for the match-clinching kill block.

Creamline made a desperate video challenge for a net touch infraction, only to be disappointed as Prado made a clean defensive stop in the review, dispelling any doubt.

De Guzman, back after almost three years of absence to play in Japan, had a quiet comeback with 12 excellent sets.

Pons, fresh off a women’s beach volleyball gold medal finish in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, paced the Cool Smashers with 13 points while Tots Carlos had 11.

Pons and Carlos combined for 22 of Creamline’s 38 kills. New acquisition libero Jen Nierva had a forgettable debut wearing the pink and white.
