Classes in Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City have been suspended as tropical depression “Basyang” continues to affect parts of Mindanao, prompting local governments to prioritize student safety.
In Davao City, the City Government ordered the two-day suspension of classes at all levels, both public and private, starting on Thursday after Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration placed the city under Signal No. 1.
According to the City Information Office, the suspension aims to ensure the safety of students amid possible strong winds and rains. Classes during the suspension period will shift to asynchronous learning.
Some schools had already started classes before the advisory was released and were instructed to hold half-day sessions only, after which students were allowed to go home.
Students and parents were also advised to stay indoors, remain alert, and take necessary safety precautions while continuing to monitor official school announcements and verified government advisories.
Meanwhile, in Cagayan de Oro City, Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy ordered the suspension of Kindergarten, Elementary, and High School classes on 5 and 6 February, under Executive Order No. 045-2026A, as “Basyang” impacts Northern Mindanao.
The city government clarified that colleges and universities may decide independently whether to suspend classes, depending on local conditions and safety assessments by school heads.
