The Office of the Special Assistant to the President (OSAP) announced Monday it is coordinating a multi-agency relief effort and a "transparent" investigation into the sinking of the M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, which capsized off Basilan on 26 January.
Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Anton Lagdameo, speaking on behalf of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., directed all concerned agencies to ensure the immediate delivery of support to survivors and the families of the 40 confirmed victims.
The OSAP is currently overseeing the government’s response to the disaster, which occurred while the vessel was en route from Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu.
While more than 100 passengers have been rescued, Lagdameo emphasized that the office’s priority remains the welfare of the bereaved and the affected communities.
"We stand in solidarity with the grieving families," Lagdameo said. "The government stands ready to extend all possible support and comfort during this difficult time."
In addition to relief coordination, the OSAP is pushing for a rigorous examination of the circumstances surrounding the sinking. Lagdameo stressed the need for an impartial probe into the vessel’s seaworthiness, passenger capacity, and regulatory compliance to establish accountability.
"We owe it to the victims and their families to pursue the truth," Lagdameo said, noting that the office views accountability as essential to restoring public confidence in maritime transport.
The OSAP also expressed its gratitude to the Philippine Coast Guard, the Armed Forces, and civilian volunteers for their rescue efforts under difficult conditions. Moving forward, the office stated it will work with regulators to review maritime safety protocols and implement stricter enforcement to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy.
