DPWH taps top contractors for Maharlika Highway rehab

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon disclosed plans to engage the country’s biggest contractors to undertake the repair and rehabilitation of the Maharlika Highway.

Dizon said the move is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to ensure the speedy yet sturdy construction of the country’s longest highway, also known as Daang Maharlika.

He explained that to guarantee both quality and efficiency, the DPWH intends to tap only the largest and most reputable contractors for the project.

It was learned that Marcos has directed concerned agencies to ensure that the rehabilitation of the highway will be completed within two years.

Dizon added that the department will avoid engaging small-time contractors, noting that they are eyeing established firms such as EEI Corporation and Megawide Construction Corporation for the planned repair of what is considered the economic backbone of the country.

“I spoke to them. I want to meet them maybe this week or next week, and they have expressed interest to help out in the major projects — the priorities of the President, the highest priority of which is Daang Maharlika,” Dizon said.

At present, the DPWH chief has been going around the country inspecting flood control projects that have remained unfinished for years despite the release of funds for their implementation.

Charges have also been filed against individuals allegedly involved in multi-billion-peso ghost flood control projects.
