A morphologist from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, USA, is claiming that the depression in the head of the rockhead poachers (Bothragonus swanii) is used by the fish to communicate with others of its kind.
Daniel Geldof, whose claim is part of his thesis presented in December, said the deep pit, as he calls the scooped out part of the fish’s head located behind its brain, creates noise or vibration when the ribs under it strike the hole’s bottom.
“This fish basically has a tiny drum kit or maraca in its head,” he says, Science News reports.
Geldof adds that when the armored, teardrop-shaped fish found in shallow waters from Alaska to California makes the buzzing and drumming sound, it is calling and courting other poachers, according to Science News.
Meanwhile, Lava Brand Inc. has created a lollipop that literally lets its suckers taste the music of three American rappers: Ice Spice, Akon and Armani White.
Lava’s Lollipop Star, unveiled at the 2026 CES, comes in three flavors: peach for Ice Spice, blueberry for Akon, and lime for White.
Abrar Al-Heeti was among those who tried the Lava lollipop at the trade fair, and the CNET reporter told USA Today that he felt tiny vibrations when he bit on the candy before hearing the lyrics of an Ice Spice song.
Lollipop Star utilizes bone conduction technology to transmit sound, USA Today reports.
“It’s not only a lollipop, but it’s a carrier of the music,” Sen Cai, Lollipop Star’s chief marketing officer, told CES attendees, according to USA Today.
Lava sells each lollipop for $8.99, with one million buyers already on the waitlist as of 9 January.
