The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday announced that portions of EDSA near West Avenue and North Avenue in Quezon City will be closed to traffic starting 1 February 2026 due to scheduled girder launching activities for the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7).
The temporary lane closures are intended to ensure public safety as heavy equipment and machinery are used to lift steel superstructure components that will connect the MRT-7 North EDSA turnback track along West Avenue.
The Department of Transportation–Project Management Office (DOTr-PMO) sought assistance from the MMDA and the Quezon City government to implement temporary lane closures and traffic rerouting schemes to mitigate the impact on motorists.
In a press briefing, MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes said traffic enforcers from the MMDA and the Quezon City government, along with traffic marshals from the DOTr’s private contractor, will be deployed to manage traffic flow. Traffic signages are also being installed to guide motorists and other road users.
“Minimal traffic is expected during the partial closure of portions of EDSA during nighttime but big impact on traffic is expected during full closure to give way to the construction activities,” Artes said. He was joined during the briefing by DOTr Undersecretary TJ Batan and Quezon City Assistant City Administrator Alfredo Kimpo.
Along EDSA near North Avenue, portions of the two outermost lanes in the northbound direction and the two innermost lanes in the southbound direction will be closed to vehicle traffic starting Feb. 1.
The closed lanes will serve as areas for the construction of tower support systems needed for the girder launching activities. The closures are also meant to ensure that motorists and commuters are not exposed to safety risks while heavy equipment is maneuvered during the lifting and launching works.
The DOTr-PMO said construction works at the closed lanes will be undertaken at the expense of the MRT-7 contractor.
Reopening of the closed lanes along the northbound direction of EDSA is scheduled on 8 May, while the southbound lanes are expected to reopen on 18 May.
As of December 2025, MRT-7 is 82.01 percent complete, with commercial operations covering the entire Quezon City segment from North EDSA to Sacred Heart.
