Cotabato ambush leaves 4 dead, one critical

MATALAM, Cotabato — What was supposed to be a simple trip home turned into a deadly ambush that left four members of the same family dead and another fighting for his life Thursday evening in Barangay New Abra.

Authorities have identified the fatalities as Rashid Sahay Mampo, 19; Rica Jane Maidlos, 18; Daryl Mampo Diansay, 16; and 11-year-old Russel Kim Mampo Diansay. A fifth victim, known only by the alias “Ebrahim,” survived but remains in critical condition at a hospital after suffering severe gunshot wounds.

Police said the surviving minor sustained a life-threatening injury after a bullet entered his abdomen and exited through his buttocks.

Initial investigation by the Matalam Municipal Police Station showed the victims were riding a black Rusi motorcycle around 6 p.m. They were reportedly heading home after stopping by a nearby house to connect to WiFi when gunmen suddenly attacked them along a dark and isolated stretch of road.

After the shooting, the suspects quickly fled toward Sitio Malupayag, still within the same barangay. Police received the report and reached the area at around 7:15 p.m., where four victims were declared dead on the spot.

Investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind the attack, looking into possible personal grudges or a land dispute. Relatives told media that the family had only been living in Barangay New Abra for a little over a month after moving from Davao City.

Authorities recovered several spent shell casings from the scene, which will undergo ballistic testing to identify the type of firearm used.

Police said more details are expected once statements are gathered from family members and the lone survivor.

Meanwhile, barangay officials are urging residents to cooperate and share any information that could help identify the attackers. Matalam remains under heightened alert as police continue a manhunt to prevent further violence and ensure community safety.
