The Philippine National Police has intensified peace and order measures in Basilan as it mobilized police forces to assist the military in pursuing suspects behind the shooting of two soldiers in Tipo-Tipo town.

PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region was directed to step up security operations to deter gun-related attacks and help maintain peace and order in the province.

“We are coordinating and closely working with the Armed Forces of the Philippines not only in the conduct of pursuit operations but also in initiating security measures to prevent the repeat of this incident and eventually ensure peace and order for the local residents,” Nartatez said in a statement.

Based on initial police investigation, the victims were buying necessities at a community store about 200 meters from a military camp when they were shot in Tipo-Tipo on Monday.

Two members of the Philippine Army’s 45th Infantry Battalion were injured in the attack.

Nartatez said police units would remain on heightened alert to prevent further attacks by lawless groups.

“Our units, together with the military, are on heightened alert to prevent attacks and swiftly respond to any threat. We are committed to keeping our communities safe,” he said.

The PNP chief also directed local police units to strengthen coordination and engagement with communities to build public trust and confidence in law enforcement.
