NMC backs DFA, rejects ‘misleading’ claims on WPS

The National Maritime Council (NMC) on Wednesday expressed full support for the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) amid what it described as unfounded and misleading claims surrounding recent developments in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

In a statement, the NMC reiterated that the Philippine government’s position on maritime issues remains “clear and consistent,” anchored on truth, transparency, and the rule of law.

It stressed that the country’s maritime rights and interests are grounded in international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and affirmed by the 2016 Arbitral Award.

The NMC stressed that the importance of accurate, evidence-based public discourse on maritime issues cannot be overstated.

It further underscores that documented facts obtained through lawful, transparent, and professional means are central to national maritime policy and informed public understanding.

The council also emphasized that official engagements with other states are conducted through established diplomatic and legal channels at the institutional and state levels, and are governed by international law and mutual respect. It cautioned against rhetoric, misinformation, and disinformation that could inflame public sentiment.

Reaffirming the country’s measured approach, the NMC said the Philippines does not seek provocation or escalation in the West Philippine Sea.

Instead, it aims to protect its people, uphold sovereign rights and maritime entitlements, and pursue the peaceful resolution of disputes through lawful and diplomatic means, consistent with its obligations as a responsible member of the international community.

The NMC called for restraint, factual clarity, and respect for international law in all discussions related to the WPS.

“We remain united with the DFA and other government institutions in advancing a principled, coherent, and credible national position that safeguards our sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction,” it added.
