The Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office joined the nation in honoring the 44 members of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force who died during the Mamasapano operation, paying tribute to their heroism and underscoring the enduring cost of peace and justice.
Among those remembered was Police Officer 2 Omar A. Nacionales, a native of Marcos, Ilocos Norte, whose courage and selfless service continue to inspire both the police force and the community he came from. Nacionales was remembered for his unwavering patriotism and quiet bravery, qualities that exemplified the fighting spirit rooted in Ilokano heritage.
The commemoration opened with a wreath-laying ceremony at the INPPO SAF Monument inside Camp Capt. Valentin S. Juan in Laoag City. Wreaths were offered by NUP Aleta Nacionales Tabulinar, sister of the late PO2 Nacionales, and Police Colonel Joemar Q. Labiano, provincial director of INPPO. A volley fire followed, led by Police Captain Ylam B. Lambenecio, company commander of the 114th Special Action Company, 11th Special Action Battalion.
Also present were members of the provincial command group, INPPO personnel, the 114th SAC–11th SAB, the SAF Seaborne Unit, the 101st Maneuver Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 1, and the 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company.
After the ceremony in Laoag City, the INPPO delegation proceeded to Barangay Escoda in Marcos, Ilocos Norte, for the dedication of a barangay road named in honor of PO2 Nacionales. The activity was led by the local government unit of Marcos under Mayor Antonio V. Mariano, represented by Vice Mayor Rhonel Allan M. Coloma, along with barangay officials headed by Punong Barangay Elrey M. Limbaoan and members of the community.
Barangay officials said a resolution was passed naming the road after the fallen police officer as a symbol of gratitude for his sacrifice, bravery, patriotism and dedication to national service. The dedication is significant as PO2 Nacionales is the first among the SAF 44 to have a public road formally named after him, setting a precedent for honoring the fallen heroes in lasting ways.
In his message, Labiano stressed that the legacy of the SAF 44 must never fade, saying their sacrifice serves as a powerful reminder of the price paid to preserve peace and order. He urged both police personnel and the public to continue upholding the values for which the fallen heroes gave their lives.
The ceremony concluded with the ribbon-cutting of the newly named PO2 Omar A. Nacionales Road, a permanent marker of remembrance in his hometown, ensuring that future generations will remember a son of Ilocos Norte who served with honor, courage and selflessness.
