Davao police warn vs bomb threat hoaxers

Davao City — Local authorities are warning the public against spreading bomb threats after two separate hoaxes disrupted classes at city schools on 21 January.

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) reported that threats were directed at Cabantian National High School and the Assumption College of Davao.

Both incidents prompted immediate evacuations and security sweeps, though no explosives were found.

DCPO spokesperson Capt. Hazel Tuazon said investigators believe the timing of the threats is linked to the school calendar.

“These bomb threats are timed to coincide with examination periods aimed to disrupt classes,” Tuazon said. “Based on previous investigations, many of these incidents have been traced back to students.”

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine Unit, supported by Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams, cleared both campuses before declaring the reports hoaxes.

Under acting city director Col. Mannan Muarip, the DCPO is reminding the public that bomb threats are serious criminal offenses. Under Presidential Decree No. 1727, individuals can face legal action for making such threats, regardless of whether they are intended as pranks or attempts to avoid school activities.
