AFP: Lanao ambush kills 4 soldiers

Nonoy Lacson

ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Armed Forces of the Philippines–Western Mindanao Command (AFP-WMC) has strongly condemned what it described as a “senseless and treacherous” ambush carried out by members of the Dawlah Islamiya–Maute Group (DI-MG) in Munai, Lanao del Norte.

AFP-WMC Commander Major General Donald M. Gumiran confirmed that the attack happened at around 10:20 a.m. Friday in Barangay Liningding, Munai. The soldiers were riding in a Toyota Avanza when armed DI-MG combatants suddenly opened fire using high-powered firearms.

Four soldiers were killed in the attack, while another was wounded and is now receiving medical treatment.

The fatalities were identified as Staff Sergeant Diosito A. Araya, Sergeant Gilbert P. Arnoza, Sergeant Junel M. Calgas, and Private Laniton. Corporal Rollen L. dela Cruz was seriously wounded.

Maj. Gen. Gumiran said the slain and wounded soldiers were members of Task Unit TABANG, which operates under the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade. The unit is part of the Army’s civil-military operations, primarily focused on community service, humanitarian assistance, and peace-building.

“They were not engaged in combat operations at the time of the incident,” Gumiran said, stressing that the attack showed a blatant disregard for human life and the safety of civilians.

Following the ambush, troops from the 44th Infantry Battalion were immediately deployed to secure the area and pursue the attackers. Clearing operations are ongoing to ensure the safety of nearby communities and to prevent further violence.

The AFP-WMC said it remains fully committed to holding the perpetrators accountable and ensuring they face the full force of the law. Justice, the command said, will be pursued for the fallen soldiers and their families.

Maj. Gen. Gumiran also extended the military’s deepest condolences to the families of those killed, saying their sacrifice in the service of peace and the Filipino people will always be honored. The names of the fatalities are being withheld pending proper notification of their next of kin.
