Staying true to the song: Martin Nievera on legacy

Jefferson Fernando

Decades into a career that helped define the sound of Filipino pop balladry, Martin Nievera remains grounded in one guiding principle: authenticity. In an industry constantly reshaped by trends, platforms, and new voices, the Concert King believes survival—and peace of mind—comes from embracing one’s roots rather than running from them.

For Nievera, relevance does not mean reinvention for reinvention’s sake. It means honoring the music and the audience that shaped his journey.

“We have corporate shows who get me to do what I do. People from our era, they want us to sing the songs we did back then, which I think—I hope—paved the way to what all of you are mentioning today,” he said.

Looking back, Nievera sees his role not as a competitor in today’s crowded scene, but as part of the foundation that made many dreams possible.

“I like to think that I was one of those cobblestones on that way to having success in your dreams.”

That perspective, he said, leaves him with only one real option—to fully accept and love where he comes from.

“So I really have no choice but to embrace where I came from, stick to my core, and love it.”

For the veteran singer, this isn’t just a creative decision; it’s a matter of well-being. Chasing trends or worrying about competition, he admitted, would only lead to unnecessary pressure.

“Because if I don’t love it, I will have mental issues. I’d be worried about competition, which I don’t.”

Instead, Nievera chooses contentment over comparison, clarity over noise.

“The Martin that you see today—I love who I am. I love where I am today.”

In an era where success is often measured by virality and constant reinvention, Martin Nievera’s reflection offers a quieter, enduring lesson: longevity is built on self-acceptance, and true relevance comes from staying faithful to the song that made you who you are.
