Magalong eyes cable transport system for Baguio commuters

BAGUIO CITY — Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the city government is working closely with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon on the possible implementation of a cable transport system not only for tourists but also for public commuters.

“So nagkaroon na ng initial feasibility study para dito,” Magalong said. He added that they are currently looking for possible grants to allow the conduct of a comprehensive feasibility study.

The mayor clarified that the proposed cable transport system will be for Baguio City only. He noted that an earlier plan to establish a cable system connecting La Trinidad, Benguet, and Baguio City may no longer push through.

“Kasi dati, if you remember, ang coverage ng cable car project ay aabot ng La Trinidad pero mukhang walang ng interes ang Benguet to participate,” he added.

Meanwhile, on the construction of the Baguio City Integrated Terminal (BCIT), Magalong said no other company has shown the core competence needed for the project except Megawide Construction Corp.

He expressed confidence in Megawide, citing its experience in handling complex infrastructure projects, including the construction of airport terminals in Clark and Cebu.

Magalong said he believes the BCIT is either the second or third intermodal transport terminal handled by Megawide. While there are no final figures yet, he said Baguio City is expected to significantly benefit from revenue shares once the BCIT becomes operational. The project is expected to be completed within two years.
