The Philippine National Police (PNP) expressed openness to proposals to strengthen the Internal Affairs Service (IAS), including a possible move to fully separate it from the police organization to enhance its independence.

PNP chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the organization welcomes a proposal by Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson to file a bill that would make the IAS an independent body with broader authority to investigate and discipline erring police officers.

Nartatez said the PNP supports legislative measures aimed at improving accountability within the police force and reinforcing disciplinary mechanisms.

He noted that the PNP has already implemented measures to uphold the integrity and operational independence of the IAS in investigating police misconduct nationwide.

The PNP chief said the organization is prepared to support reforms that clearly define the roles of oversight bodies to ensure accountability within the ranks.

Nartatez also said addressing misconduct among police officers remains a priority of his administration to ensure transparency and accountability in law enforcement agencies.

He added that the PNP leadership will continue to focus on improving police operations and enforcing discipline within the organization.
