Park Inn by Radisson Clark, part of the hospitality portfolio of SM Hotels & Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) — the hotel and events arm of SM Prime Holdings Inc. — has been awarded a Special Award for Innovative Use of Technology at the Department of Energy’s (DoE) 5th Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards. The recognition affirms the hotel’s technology-led Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C) strategy, which delivers measurable reductions in energy use while enhancing operational performance.

Located in Central Luzon, Park Inn by Radisson Clark stood out for its ability to balance sustainability with guest comfort through intelligent design and shared infrastructure. The DoE cited the hotel’s innovative systems that enable significant energy savings without compromising service quality.

A key driver of the award is the hotel’s reliance in an offsite cooling solution that supplies chilled water from a nearby central plant. By operating without its own chiller equipment, the property minimizes electricity consumption, maintains stable indoor temperatures and reduces maintenance demands — demonstrating how centralized systems can elevate efficiency in hospitality operations.

Additional gains come from the integration of energy-efficient cooling components, including constant flow valves within the air-conditioning network. Collectively, these initiatives result in annual energy savings of more than 240,000 kilowatt-hours and help avoid approximately 174 metric tons of carbon emissions each year.

“This recognition reflects our long-term commitment to embedding sustainability into our developments,” said Eric Uy, senior vice president for Project Management and Technical Support Services of SMHCC. “Park Inn by Radisson Clark illustrates how shared infrastructure and modern technology can drive tangible energy savings, operational efficiency and lasting environmental value. From the outset, the property was designed with these principles in mind — it was not simply retrofitted to qualify for an award.”

The achievement supports SMHCC’s Road to Net Zero by 2040 and reinforces the company’s broader sustainability agenda across its expanding hospitality and convention portfolio. SMHCC currently operates 10 hotel properties with more than 2,600 rooms, alongside over 42,000 square meters of leasable convention space. Its portfolio includes Taal Vista Hotel, Pico Sands Hotel, Conrad Manila, Lanson Place Mall of Asia, Radisson Blu Cebu, multiple Park Inn by Radisson properties nationwide, and the SMX Convention Centers and trade halls across key urban hubs.

With this latest DoE recognition, Park Inn by Radisson Clark strengthens its position as a benchmark for energy-efficient hotel operations in the Philippines and reflects SMHCC’s wider push to future-proof its properties through innovation and sustainability.
