Phoenix parts ways with Wilson

Phoenix parted ways with head coach Wily Wilson as the franchise looks to take a different direction in its quest to turn its fortunes around after languishing at the bottom of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) for the past couple of years.

The Fuel Masters management announced on Wednesday through its social media account that it has decided to let go of Wilson after just one conference, as well as team consultant and former mentor Jamike Jarin.

“After much evaluation, the Phoenix Fuel Masters have amicably parted ways with head coach Willy Wilson and team consultant Jamike Jarin, effective immediately,” Phoenix said in its official statement.

Wilson was canned following the Fuel Masters’ elimination round exit in the Season 50 Philippine Cup, five months after he was tapped as a replacement for Jarin.

His short stint with Phoenix saw him deliver three wins in 11 games for a 10th-place finish.

It was the Fuel Masters’ fifth straight conference outside of the playoffs picture after reaching the semifinals of the 2023-2024 Commissioner’s Cup.

Phoenix had a total of 14 wins in the past five tournaments.

Jarin took over the coaching reins in 2023 from Topex Robinson. He was then replaced by Wilson, who played for the team for two years before taking the role of assistant coach in 2020.

“We thank coach Willy and Jamike for their hard work, commitment and professionalism through the years and wish them the very best in their future endeavors,” the team said.
