Imee Marcos faces online backlash over attire at Sto. Niño Basilica

DT

Senator Imee Marcos faced criticism online after photos of her visit to the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu during the Sinulog festivities appeared to show her wearing attire that did not comply with the church’s dress code.

Marcos made a visit to the basilica on Saturday, 10 January, as part of activities surrounding the annual Sinulog celebration. Images later posted on her official social media account showed her wearing a sleeveless red blouse, which netizens pointed out is prohibited inside the basilica under its guidelines on proper attire.

Several commenters raised concerns over the consistent enforcement of church rules, noting that ordinary worshippers have previously been denied entry for not meeting dress code requirements.

The discussion also reignited broader questions about equal treatment, with netizens debating whether public officials are afforded leniency not extended to regular devotees, particularly during major religious events.

Amid the backlash, the basilica released a statement reminding the faithful to observe proper attire at all times.
