The Provincial Government of Bataan and the Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) are set to conduct a research project to evaluate energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in selected government facilities across the province.
Governor Joet Garcia and BPSU President Dr. Ruby B. Santos-Matibag signed a memorandum of agreement on 7 January 2026, for Project Berhiya: Accounting of Energy Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions, during a ceremony held at The Bunker.
The project aims to assess current energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in provincial government infrastructure and identify ways to improve efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
Garcia said the initiative will provide the provincial government with a clearer and more scientific basis for crafting an energy management plan. He added that the study will help pinpoint offices and facilities with high electricity consumption.
He also noted that the findings would serve as a standard for developing concrete recommendations to make provincial government offices more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
“Malaki ang maitutulong ng nasabing proyekto sa pagsusulong ng sustainable development, pagtitipid sa gastusin sa enerhiya, at pagpapatibay ng mga patakarang pangkalikasan sa Bataan,” Garcia said.
The provincial government is currently undertaking a scientific measurement of its energy footprint to develop data-driven policies for emissions reduction, as consolidated figures are not yet available.
These local efforts align with the Philippines’ national commitment to reduce and avoid projected greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent between 2020 and 2030, as outlined in the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution Implementation Plan.
