The remains of a female member of the New People’s Army (NPA) who was killed during recent encounters in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro were formally turned over to her family following coordination facilitated by the Army’s 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division.

The Philippine Army on Wednesday said the government troops found the NPA member dead on 2 January during clearing operations in Barangay Cabacao, a day after a guided close air support operation in the area.

Her remains were discovered after her companions fled the encounter site.

Despite difficult terrain and ongoing security operations, soldiers recovered and secured the remains. The body was later airlifted from Occidental Mindoro to Batangas using a military helicopter of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to allow the family to take custody and proceed with burial arrangements.

2nd Infantry Division spokesperson and Division Public Affairs Office chief Colonel Michael Aquino said the turnover was completed with the cooperation of the family, which requested privacy.

“This is the extent of the information we can share at this time. We are grateful that the family has been cooperative and has coordinated with the 2nd Infantry Division. They have also requested privacy until their loved one is laid to rest, and we fully respect that request,” Aquino said.

The 2nd Infantry Division said security operations in Occidental Mindoro remain ongoing to ensure the safety of residents, particularly in remote areas affected by armed group activity.

Authorities added that coordination with local communities continues as part of efforts to maintain peace and order in the province.
