UNLESS the Land Transportation Office relents or a court issues a temporary restraining order, the ban on electric bikes and trikes from major roads and highways will be enforced starting on 1 December 2025. Photograph by John Carlo Magallon for DAILY TRIBUNE

The Land Transportation Office plans to implement a nationwide ban on electric tricycles and electric bicycles.

In a radio interview, LTO Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao said the agency will move toward nationwide implementation after the ban on major roads proves successful. These roads include EDSA from Pasay to Monumento, C-5, Roxas Boulevard, Quirino Avenue to Magallanes–SLEX, Commonwealth Avenue, and Marcos Highway.

“Initially, ito una then after a few days mag-eexpand kami,” he said.

Lacanilao said he has requested enforcers to assist the agency in covering inner roads as well.

He noted that cases such as the recent incident on EDSA, where an e-bike driver was caught counterflowing, would result in immediate impoundment if it is confirmed that the driver is unlicensed.

“Bawal naman talaga ang mga tricycle sa national highways,” he added.

Lacanilao also reminded the public that modified mufflers are considered illegal modifications and that penalties, including fines, will be imposed on violators.

He said motorcycles may be impounded if a driver commits another violation involving a modified muffler.
