AFP to sanction soldiers caught firing guns indiscriminately

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has warned that military personnel caught firing their weapons indiscriminately during the New Year celebrations will face sanctions, stressing the need for discipline and professionalism even during the holiday season.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the AFP reminded all personnel of their responsibility to handle firearms safely and responsibly at all times.

While there is no directive requiring service firearms to be taped, commanders were instructed to strengthen supervision, accountability, and alertness within their respective units.

“All soldiers are expected to strictly follow existing regulations on the safe and responsible handling of firearms,” the statement read.

“The AFP will continue to safeguard our people while ensuring that New Year celebrations remain peaceful, orderly, and free from harm,” it added.

Meanwhile, Philippine Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala said violations of firearm regulations would be dealt with accordingly.

Dema-ala stressed there is no need to disable service firearms, expressing confidence that soldiers would exercise discipline and responsibility.

“We regard the professionalism of each Army personnel, and they are responsible enough to abide by the directives and regulations on indiscriminate firing,” he said.

The warning comes amid reports of stray bullet incidents during the holiday season. Authorities recorded at least one fatality in Tondo, Manila, after a man was hit by a stray bullet on Christmas Day.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) earlier reported that seven individuals were arrested for indiscriminate firing between December 16 and 26.

The PNP reiterated that a one-strike policy will be strictly enforced against police personnel and gun owners who violate firearm regulations during the holiday period.

Authorities continue to urge both the public and uniformed personnel to celebrate responsibly to prevent injuries and deaths caused by stray bullets.
