New York braces for snowstorm set to snarl post-holiday travel

DT

New Yorkers heading home for the holidays are being urged to prepare for hazardous travel conditions as a winter storm is forecast to blanket the city and nearby regions with significant snowfall late this week.

According to weather forecasters cited by the New York Post, a fast-moving winter system is expected to arrive Friday afternoon and linger into early Saturday, bringing several inches of snow across New York City and the broader tri-state area. While the storm will miss Christmas Day itself, it is projected to coincide with heavy post-holiday travel.

Meteorologists estimate that New York City could see between three and six inches of snow, with higher accumulations possible in surrounding areas. Portions of northern New Jersey and areas along the Interstate 287 corridor could receive as much as eight inches, while parts of Long Island may also see heavier snowfall.

The storm is expected to intensify around mid-afternoon Friday, potentially affecting evening commuters, and taper off by Saturday morning. Forecasters are also monitoring the possibility of sleet mixing in, particularly in areas south and west of the city, which could further complicate road conditions.

AccuWeather meteorologist Tyler Roys told the New York Post that snowfall totals in the region are becoming increasingly certain, warning that travel disruptions are likely from Friday evening through Saturday morning. He noted that the snow is expected to be light and powdery, which may limit accumulation efficiency but still pose challenges for drivers.

City agencies say preparations are already underway. Acting Department of Sanitation Commissioner Javier Lojan said crews were deployed in advance of the storm and remain on standby to respond as conditions evolve.

New York City officials have issued a travel advisory urging residents to avoid unnecessary driving during the storm window and to allow extra time if using public transportation. Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the importance of caution as New Yorkers continue holiday celebrations and prepare for the New Year.

Following the storm, Christmas Day itself is expected to be dry but cold, with near-freezing temperatures in the morning and brisk winds developing by the afternoon. Overnight temperatures could dip into the teens in colder parts of the region.

The weather details were reported by the New York Post, citing AccuWeather and city officials.
