The University of Santo Tomas Singers (USTS) has once again brought global recognition to the Philippines, winning the coveted Oak Tree of Derry International Competition at the 13th City of Derry International Choir Festival in Northern Ireland last 27 October.

The prestigious victory came in the midst of the choral ensemble’s 39th International Concert Tour through the United Kingdom, which included multiple performances in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

In addition to securing the top prize, the UST Singers earned multiple distinctions during the competition. They won the Contemporary Music Centre Award for Best Performance of a Piece by an Irish Composer for their interpretation of Seán Doherty’s “The Destroyer,” and the Bishop’s Gate Hotel Award for Outstanding Performance of a Work Composed Before 1750 for their rendition of Thomas Greaves’ “Come Away, Sweet Love.”

The choir also captivated the audience with a performance of “Sagayán” by Filipino composer Nico Alcala II.

USTS founder and conductor Prof. Fidel G. Calalang Jr. celebrated the choir’s 33-year legacy of excellence following the victory.

“It brings immense joy and pride to once again represent the Philippines and our University in the international choral arena and reap the highest honors and prizes,” Calalang said. “This victory is also significant to the developing artistic growth and continuing quest for excellence of the choir.”

Calalang expressed gratitude for the support of the university and the Thomasian community, noting that the achievement strengthens the choir’s mission of bringing Filipino music and Thomasian artistry to audiences worldwide.

The UST Singers, founded in 1992, have served as cultural ambassadors for over three decades, amassing more than 85 top prizes from prestigious international competitions. They remain the only choir in history to win the “Choir of the World — Luciano Pavarotti Trophy” twice at the renowned Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales.
