CHONBURI, Thailand — Filipino marksmen delivered the most gold medals for Team Philippines with four in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games practical shooting competition Monday at the Eastern National Sport Training Center here.
World champion Rolly Nathaniel Tecson led the Philippines’ golden assault after ruling the standard division event.
He accumulated a total score of 1,680.7889 in three days of competition where competitors went through 18 stages to test their skills, speed and precision.
Tecson won the same event in the IPSC Handgun World Shoot champion last August in South Africa in a 1-2 finish with Khalil Viray.
“From the very first day up until the last, we were able to stay consistent and minimize our errors. That’s why we’re so happy,” Tecson said, extending his gratitude to the support that the Philippine Sports Commission has been giving them.
“I’m proud because now, we’re being recognized by the government. Before, we played in the world championship in South Africa, but we were not really supported by the government. This time, we were given the chance to join the SEA Games and winning the gold medal is a proud moment for the country.”
Also winning mints were Edcel Gino (production optics), Erin Matter Nicor (open division women) and Genesis Pible (production optics women).
Gino tallied 1,654.0344 points while Micor had a cumulative total score of 1,399.3154. Pible collected a score of 1,293.7900. M. ESCARLOTE
Viray was second in the standard event but did not win a medal due to a one-medal, one-country rule imposed by the organizers.
Also bringing home medals in the eight-event competition were silver medalist Evelyn Woods (production division women’s) and bronze winners Gerard Loy (open division), Arton John Lanuza (production division) and Stefanie Kathrene Lee (standard division).
