From Lockdown Idea to Colorful Filipino Craftsmanship

‘It’s hard work, but it’s fulfilling. We meet our customers, shake their hands, and hear their stories.’

In the midst of a global lockdown, when uncertainty was the only constant, creativity found a way to bloom. For Iann Villamor and Kath Madrid, founders of Baybayin Bags, that spark came during a simple bike ride across Metro Manila — an idea that would eventually grow into a thriving brand celebrating Filipino artistry and practical design.

Host Patricia Ramirez of Pairfect recently sat down with the duo, uncovering the story behind the bags that have captured the attention of creatives, festival-goers, and even musicians across the country. What began as a functional solution for bikers has blossomed into a collection of vibrant, versatile bags, rooted in Filipino identity and ingenuity.

A lockdown spark

The idea for Baybayin Bags emerged during the early days of the pandemic. Ian recounts how, during his daily bike rides, he noticed the lackluster quality of many commercially available bags — simple, expensive, and not made to last. “I realized since it’s a pandemic, you want to be able to bring everything on your bike,” he explains. Kath’s mother, who had experience making corporate giveaway bags, became the perfect partner in translating their concept into tangible designs. Together, Iann and Kath crafted their first samples, combining functionality with colorful aesthetics.

From the start, the bags were sold online, initially to friends and fellow bikers. But the appeal quickly spread beyond the cycling community. Their designs, which cleverly integrated reflective elements for safety, multicolor palettes, and practical compartments, caught the attention of a growing audience who appreciated both style and utility.

Designs with a personal touch

Each Baybayin Bag is a reflection of its creators’ lifestyles. Iann designed a bag to fit Kath’s tumbler perfectly, accommodating the growing popularity of reusable drinkware in the Philippines. Other designs, like their concert-ready tote bag, emerged organically — crafted to hold essentials from milk tea to festival gear. The duo embraces spontaneity in their creative process, launching collections abruptly when inspiration strikes, resulting in a current lineup of about 30 designs.

Kath and Iann’s approach emphasizes both form and function. Their bags are celebrated for practical features — multiple compartments, adjustable straps, and versatile sizing — while maintaining playful, colorful designs that make them stand out in a crowd. Beyond aesthetics, Baybayin Bags offers a lifetime warranty, reflecting the founders’ commitment to quality and customer trust.

Rooted in Filipino culture

The brand name, Baybayin, often mistaken as a reference to the ancient Filipino script, is in fact inspired by the verb form, meaning “to post or travel.” Iann explains, “From my province in Batangas, there are ‘bay’ areas — coasts where biking connects to life’s journey. We wanted something Tagalog, truly Filipino, not just a fancy English word.” The name symbolizes the duo’s commitment to cultural authenticity, a theme that resonates through every stitch of their bags.

Their pride in local craftsmanship extends to sourcing. While some materials are sourced internationally, many are locally produced, supporting small-scale Filipino artisans. “We want to honor Filipino roots while creating something functional and beautiful,” says Kath.

Growing with community

Despite the brand’s success, Baybayin Bags remains a small, hands-on operation. The team consists of Iann, Kath, and one dedicated worker, affectionately called their mananahe, who handles the tailoring. From sourcing textiles to customer interactions at pop-up events, the founders remain intimately involved in every stage. “It’s hard work, but it’s fulfilling. We meet our customers, shake their hands, and hear their stories,” Iann shares. This personal approach has cultivated a loyal following, growing organically to over 4,000 Instagram followers, with many customers returning repeatedly.

Baybayin Bags has found fans not only among everyday users but also among local creatives and musicians. Pop-up events in Makati and Alabang, as well as festival appearances, have brought the brand closer to its community, creating memorable experiences beyond the product itself.

Looking ahead

For Iann and Kath, the future is full of possibilities. Physical stores, more collaborations with artists and even international shipping are on the horizon. While mindful of logistics and budgets, the founders remain committed to keeping their brand grounded in Filipino culture and community engagement.

Their advice to fellow creative entrepreneurs is simple but profound: “Be true to yourself. Be genuine. Sacrifice time and effort and be relentless. People will reject you, but you have to keep going.” For Baybayin Bags, this philosophy has guided them from a lockdown idea to a brand that’s both functional and joyful, vibrant and authentic.

In the colorful compartments of a Baybayin Bag, one can see more than just pockets for essentials — they hold stories of passion, collaboration, and a deep respect for Filipino creativity. Ian and Kat have proven that even in uncertain times, with shared vision and dedication, something beautiful can emerge — something that carries the spirit of home wherever it goes.
