Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) marked the start of the holiday season with the lighting of its iconic Christmas tree on 4 December at the Terminal 1 Airport Village, embracing the theme “A Christmas of Light and Hope for Every Home.”

MCIA, considered the main tourism transfer hub for the Visayas and Mindanao, said this year’s celebration highlights the airport’s role as the emotional backdrop for thousands of Filipino homecomings during the holidays.

Athanasios Titonis, chief executive officer of Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation (ACAC), said the airport aims to create a warm and positive experience for millions of travelers during the peak season.

“At MCIA, we strive to be more than just a transit point; we are a place where journeys connect and stories begin,” Titonis said. “We want this tree to serve not just as a decoration, but as a beacon of optimism for the coming year.”

The towering Christmas tree, made with sustainable materials and adorned with ornaments inspired by Cebu’s vibrant culture, was unveiled before government officials, airline representatives, airport employees, stakeholders and members of the media.

Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) general manager and CEO Julius Neri Jr. said the annual tradition serves as a reminder of unity among the airport community.

“The lighting of our Christmas tree is a cherished tradition that brings the entire airport community together,” Neri said. “No matter where our passengers are headed or where they are returning from, the spirit of Cebu goes with them.”

MCIA said travelers can expect holiday-themed activities in the coming weeks, including festive musical performances, Christmas photo spots, and special treats to enhance the passenger experience. Simbang Gabi will also be held at the Terminal 1 Airport Chapel from 15 to 23 December.
