OPOL, Misamis Oriental — Tourism officers from across Northern Mindanao convened recently to strengthen regional strategies for product and tour circuit development, destination branding, digital storytelling and tourism standards, as the region pushes for a more competitive and community-centered tourism industry.

The discussions were held during the Northern Mindanao Tourism Officers Summit, organized by the Department of Tourism-10 (DoT-10) in Opol, under the theme “Empowering Communities Through Tourism.”

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, in a message delivered by Undersecretary Maria Rica Bueno, said the summit underscored the region’s commitment to improving the quality and competitiveness of its tourism offerings.

“This summit reaffirms what Northern Mindanao has long demonstrated — that the heart of tourism lies in strong communities and committed local leadership,” Frasco said. “It is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to building Northern Mindanao as a model for sustainable and community-centered tourism in the Philippines.”

Frasco reported continued growth in the region’s tourism sector, noting that more than 1.3 million overnight visitors were recorded as of the third quarter of 2025.

As of 30 November, Northern Mindanao has accredited 496 tourism establishments, reflecting improved compliance and professionalism in delivering quality services.

The region has also intensified skills development efforts. Frasco said 3,450 individuals have completed the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence training as of 27 November, while 79 other tourism-related training programs have benefited around 4,200 participants.

“These numbers speak to your dedication to building a highly competent and service-oriented tourism workforce that upholds the values and spirit of Filipino hospitality,” she said.
