After four years away from the spotlight to embrace a quiet life in Olongapo with her husband Gregg Homan and their daughter, Baby Bean, Angelica Panganiban is officially back on the big screen—renewed, selective, and firmly holding on to the peace she worked hard to build. For the actress, only one project proved worthy of interrupting that calm: UnMarry, an official entry to the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival directed by Jeffrey Jeturian.
Speaking during the film’s mediacon at Noctos Bar in Quezon City, Angelica shared that she had received numerous offers to return to filmmaking in recent years, but none felt compelling enough.
“No offense meant sa ibang nag-a-aya na gumawa na ako ng pelikula, at nang mabasa ko ‘yung kuwento parang wala kasing lukso ng dugo, parang hindi nakaka-comeback ‘yung dating,” she said.
Content with her life as a wife and mother, Angelica said she needed a story powerful enough to pull her away from home, even for a short while.
“‘Ay sandali ang ganda nito.’ Sandali, luluwas ako para rito. Kailangan ko ‘yung manggigil ako para sa project, ‘yung hindi ka makakatulog na kapag pinalagpas ko ito parang panghihinayangan ko. ‘Yun ang hinihintay kong klase ng project,” she added.
That moment arrived with a message from the one director she said she could never refuse—Jeffrey Jeturian.
Recalling that day, Angelica said she immediately felt nervous when Jeturian reached out. “Nu’ng nag-text sa akin si direk Jeff, kinabahan na ako kasi love ko si direk Jeff. ‘Hi Angge, puwede ba kaming mag-present sa ’yo ng film?’”
The same day, producer Atty. Joji Alonso sent her a message, followed by a call from Eugene Domingo. A Zoom meeting soon followed, during which Zanjoe Marudo’s name was mentioned. Angelica recalled thinking, half-jokingly, “Ay patay, eto na.”
Everything unfolded quickly, and she said it felt like she was being lovingly overwhelmed by people she deeply respected. “Sabi ko nga sa tahimik ng buhay ko ngayon, kailangan ko ng worth it… nu’ng dumating itong UnMarry, worth it talaga, at hindi ko kayo bibiguin sa pelikulang ito,” she said.
Angelica admitted that while she still loves working, motherhood has reshaped her priorities. She said she waited and prayed for the family life she has now, making each moment with them deeply precious.
“Gusto ko pa ring mag-work, kaya lang ang tagal ko rin kasing pinag-pray kung anong meron ako ngayon kaya ini-enjoy ko talaga… ‘yung time na nago-grow ‘yung family namin sobrang precious,” she said, adding that work will always be there, but time with her child is irreplaceable.
Director Jeturian himself believes Angelica’s role in UnMarry is award-worthy. Asked if she is eyeing the Best Actress trophy this MMFF, Angelica laughed nervously and quipped, “Ano ba ‘yan, ang hirap magsalita… mag-praktis na ba ako?”
With her usual candor, she added, “Always a nominee but never a winner. Kung ibibigay, masaya. Kung hindi, masaya ako na nakagawa ako ng pelikula, and I think that’s enough.” She jokingly followed it up with, “Kung hindi best actress, box office na lang—mas gusto namin ito.”
Angelica also reflected on her younger years, admitting she had her share of failures and decisions she now looks at with regret. “May mga failures… may mga maling decisions na hindi ako proud… may mga nagawa akong hindi ako proud,” she said, emphasizing the importance of learning from mistakes.
One of those regrets, she admitted, was taking on too many projects at once. Jeturian recalled those days with humor, saying multiple roles he wrote for her ended in tragedy because of her grueling schedule. He admitted there was a time he vowed not to work with her again—but UnMarry changed that.
Now, he said proudly, Angelica has become his favorite actress. Angelica burst into laughter when Jeturian jokingly brought up her past relationship with Derek Ramsay, responding playfully that life is happy now—especially because she is once again favored by the director.
Despite the film’s title, Angelica said annulment was not what resonated with her most in UnMarry. Instead, it was about self-discovery. “Finding her voice or finding herself. ‘Iyon ang gusto kong mag-mirror sa mga tao. Kapag natutunan mo nang mahalin ang sarili mo, magkaka-boses ka,” she said.
Angelica stars in UnMarry alongside Zanjoe Marudo, Nico Antonio, Tom Rodriguez, Solenn Heussaff, Zack Sibug, Donna Cariaga, and Eugene Domingo. Produced by Quantum Films and Cineko Productions and directed by Jeffrey Jeturian, the film opens December 25 as an official entry to the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival.
The quiet life may have been her refuge in recent years, but UnMarry marks Angelica Panganiban’s return—not just to the big screen, but to a version of herself that is grounded, selective, and fully present.
