Senator Loren Legarda on Tuesday urged all barangays nationwide to launch a year-end “drainage hanapin, drainage linisin” drive to prevent flooding, reduce mosquito-borne illnesses, and curb water contamination ahead of the new year.
With only one month remaining in 2025, Legarda called the collective cleanup effort “a gift of safety for our families and a gift of care for nature,” declaring, “let this be our collective offering as we close 2025.”
Citing data from the state weather bureau, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Legarda cited that 22 tropical cyclones have already entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility this year, with one or two more expected before December ends. She stressed the need for urgent preventative measures.
“Every flood reminds us of what we failed to do. Let us not wait for another disaster to act. This should be our responsibility, starting at the barangay level,” the long-time environmental advocate emphasized.
Legarda stressed that clogged drainage is a leading cause of flooding, creates stagnant water where mosquitoes breed, and contributes to the spread of waterborne diseases. She said these issues can be reduced through simple, consistent community action.
The senator called on barangay leaders and residents to work together to map canals and waterways, conduct regular cleanups, strictly enforce the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, and mobilize monitoring teams.
She also called for community education campaigns to remind households that throwing trash into canals is illegal and dangerous.
