Boni Day reminds Pinoys: Value honor

Amid the country’s woes due to the corruption scandal, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. paused to reflect on the courage displayed by Gat Andres Bonifacio as he faced the threats that affected many Filipinos during his time.

Today, the nation commemorates the 162nd birth anniversary of the national hero who is “one of the great heroes of our history,” according to Marcos.

“[He] ignited our united feelings, and opened our eyes to fight against the oppression of Filipinos,” he said.

Marcos noted that, even amid life’s challenges, Bonifacio inspired the people to stand for freedom and oppose the injustice that afflicted society, a lesson that remains relevant today.

“He continues to inspire each of us, and his memory also fuels our determination to preserve the freedom he fought for and that we cherish today,” he said.

Nom de guerre: Maypagasa

Marcos recalled the humble beginnings of Bonifacio, which he related to the stories of inequality and injustice that inspired him to form the “Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan” or KKK which led the fight for the nation’s freedom.

He emphasized the hardships Bonifacio faced, which fueled his interest in reform until he stood out as a leader and a hero known as “El Supremo”— proof that heroism starts from within.
