BPS seeks public input on textile standards

Toby Magsaysay

The Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS) is seeking public recommendations on proposed reforms to adopt several international standards on textiles and clothing.

In its latest notice, BPS Director Neil Catajay identified multiple standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that are being considered for adoption as Philippine National Standards (PNS).

Catajay said ISO 3801:1977 Textiles outlines methods for determining the mass per unit length and mass per unit area of woven fabrics. ISO 12947-2:2016 Textiles specifies the procedure for testing the abrasion resistance of fabrics using the Martindale method and determining specimen breakdown.

Meanwhile, ISO 18890:2018 Clothing defines the standard method for measuring garment dimensions.

Catajay emphasized that adopting these ISO standards aligns with good standardization practices and supports the country’s commitments under the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (WTO TBT) Agreement.

Implementing the reforms, he added, will give local companies, manufacturers, academe, consumers, testing institutions, and other stakeholders easier access to internationally recognized standards.

Read-only copies of the proposed standards are available through the 1BPS portal. Stakeholders may log in to their accounts to request access.

Comments, inputs, and concerns related to ISO 3801:1977 and ISO 12947-2:2016 may be submitted via the 1BPS portal on or before 3 December. Feedback on ISO 18890:2018 Clothing may be sent on or before 26 December.
