Muntinlupa City has begun updating its Comprehensive Land and Water Use Plan (CLWUP) and its Zoning Ordinance nearly 10 years after these were last revised to respond to environmental changes and the increasing vulnerability of the city to floods, Mayor Ruffy Biazon said.
The move follows a recent Spatial Strategies workshop led by the City Planning and Development Office. Biazon noted that community inputs are vital since barangays are the first to see changes and needs in their areas.
“The workshop is timely because we already need to update the CLWUP and the Zoning Ordinance since it has been almost ten years. Over time, there have been changes in the environment and in the needs of the city,” the mayor added, citing the city’s proximity to Laguna Lake.
He also emphasized that development plans for lakeshore communities must be reviewed to guide the city’s priorities.
In a separate development, during Muntinlupa's fourth quarter meeting with the Manila Bay Clean-Up, Rehabilitation, and Preservation Task Force, officials discussed initiatives that may be implemented locally. This stemmed from a benchmarking activity with the Quezon City Climate Change Department.
Among the measures being studied are the development of climate change information, education, and communication materials for elementary students, the creation of pocket parks and patches of green in vacant lots, and the use of vertical greenery methods.
Initial inspection has already started, but Biazon said long-term maintenance will require public involvement.
