Forty-seven low-income families in the isolated fishing community of Barangay Pugad in Hagonoy, Bulacan, now have access to safe and reliable electricity after the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led One Meralco Foundation energized their homes through its Household Electrification Program.

The foundation, in partnership with Manila Electric Company’s Malolos Business Center, Plaridel Sector Office and the local government, provided the necessary technical and financial assistance for the families to establish their own service accounts with the power distributor.

Barangay Pugad, located on Isla Pugad, is reachable only by a 30-minute boat ride from Paombong port. Most residents rely on fishing, boat rentals and market vending for their livelihood. Prior to the initiative, many households could not afford the cost of installing their own service entrances and instead relied on electricity submetering from neighbors.

Senior citizens Felino and Blesilda Fajardo had relied on a neighbor for power for decades. Felino, a fisherman, said sharing a single source made it difficult to save, with their minimal use of a fan and lights costing them 300 pesos a month.

Upon learning of the One Meralco Foundation’s program, the couple applied immediately. With their own electricity meter, they now have more control over consumption and are saving money. Happy with their newfound savings, the couple plans to purchase more entertainment appliances.

Barangay Pugad chairperson Jimmy Gregorio expressed gratitude for the support, which included helping clear street wires and assisting low-income households. He called the steps crucial for the village’s dream of having all households fully energized despite the geographical challenges.

Meantime, One Meralco Foundation president Jeffrey Tarayao highlighted the project’s impact.

“Our work in Barangay Pugad reminds us that reliable power should be available to everyone, regardless of distance or accessibility,” he said. “By conquering the logistical, financial and geographical barriers to serve this fishing community, we enabled productivity and opportunities for these families to have a better life. Our mission continues to make sure no one is left in the dark.”

Since 2011, the foundation has energized more than 85,000 low-income households within the Meralco franchise area.
