Dorothy Gale: The most famous face we won't see in 'Wicked For Good'

Pauline Songco

Fans won't see Dorothy's face in the upcoming Wicked film, and for good reason.

Director Jon M. Chu told People that he didn't want the audience to step on who they think Dorothy is, explaining that the sequel “is still Elphaba and Glinda’s journey, and she is a pawn in the middle of all of it.”

Chu teases that there will be a “tornado” moment in the film (tying into The Wizard of Oz) — but even in that context, Dorothy’s face remains hidden.

The decision to keep Dorothy's face hidden only from afar will preserve the iconic, almost mythic version of the little girl from Kansas that fans bring with them, rather than fully define her in his movie.

While her role is important, Dorothy is not the emotional or narrative focal point of the story.

Wicked: For Good is the final chapter of the untold story of the witches of Oz. Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), now demonised as The Wicked Witch of the West, lives in exile, hidden within the Ozian forest while continuing her fight for the freedom of Oz’s silenced Animals and desperately trying to expose the truth she knows about The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).

Glinda (Ariana Grande), meanwhile, has become the glamorous symbol of Goodness for all of Oz, living at the palace in Emerald City and reveling in the perks of fame and popularity.

With their singular friendship now the fulcrum of their futures, they will need to truly see each other, with honesty and empathy, if they are to change themselves and all of Oz for good.
