DoST highlights science’s importance for stronger country

Department of Science and Technology (DoST) Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. kicked off the Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) in Central Luzon by emphasizing that science is the key to achieving “freedom” from poverty, natural hazards and other national issues.

Speaking during the Central Luzon event, held under the theme “Building Smart and Sustainable Communities,” Solidum stressed that while the country still faces various challenges, opportunities to overcome them are closer than ever. He cited that through the help of local governments and communities, Filipinos can cease being “victims of disasters” and instead “become victors over disasters” through science, technology and education.

As part of the regional celebration, the DoST announced the establishment of the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP) in New Clark City, Pampanga. The VIP will serve as the country’s national institute for virology research, aiming to strengthen the Philippines’ capacity to develop local diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines for humans, animals, and plants.

The DoST also announced the launch of the DoST iHub in Central Luzon on Thursday. Solidum described the iHubs as pre-incubation centers providing training, mentorship, and resources for startups, students, and local businesses to develop innovative solutions. He added that these hubs will serve as entry points for DoST programs, ensuring opportunities reach every corner of the country.

Furthermore, the expansion of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) network nationwide is expected to further include opportunities for students from Central Luzon to access high-quality Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education. The RSTW exhibits and activities in Malolos, Bulacan, will continue until Friday.

In related news, the DoST is preparing to recognize efforts by local government units (LGUs) to adopt technology through the 2025 Philippine Smart and Sustainable Communities Awards. The awards, which recognize maturity levels in implementing smart initiatives, will be presented on 21 November at the Centennial Arena in Laoag City. Earlier this year, 29 cities were nominated across four thematic areas: Human Well-being, Wealth Creation, Wealth Protection and Sustainability.

Separately, the DoST-Science and Technology Information Institute (DoST-STII) officially opened its doors for a series of activities from 11 to 14 November in celebration of Library and Information Services Month (LISM). DoST Undersecretary for Scientific and Technical Services Maridon O. Sahagun said the celebration’s theme, “LACE-UP: Libraries — a Hub for Cultural Exploration and Unity Through Partnership,” speaks of binding together stories, people and ideas in a way that empowers communities. A highlight of the opening ceremony was the official launch of the DoST-STII’s Library Makerspace, a dedicated collaborative space combining technology, craft and innovation.
