SPD on full alert for Super Typhoon #UwanPH

Kimberly Anne Ojeda

The Southern Police District (SPD) has intensified its disaster and public safety operations in anticipation of Super Typhoon Uwan.

As of 11:00 a.m., 9 November, a total of 353 Reactionary Standby Support Force personnel, including 150 from the District Headquarters along with 73 Search, Rescue, and Retrieval personnel and 30 Quick Response Team members are on full alert across the seven city police stations under the jurisdiction of SPD.

The said personnel are tasked to assist in pre-emptive evacuations, traffic management, rescue and relief operations, and to ensure public safety in coordination with local government units and their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMOs).

The district also dispatched 82 mobile patrols and 60 motorcycle units for mobility during emergencies.

All station commanders are instructed to regularly check the status of personnel and vehicles and maintain coordination with local disaster councils.

In Taguig City, the Incident Management Center has been activated to monitor the impact of the typhoon and coordinate  actions with the Tauig DRRMO, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and the Bureau of Fire Protection.

In Muntinlupa, eight evacuation centers are open to affected residents. These include the Brgy. Buli Covered Court, Cupang JRD Multi-Purpose Hall, Cupang Mullet Covered Court, Cupang Elementary and Senior High School Covered Court, Alabang Elementary School, PEDHS Evacuation Center, and Putatan Evacuation Center. SPD personnel are stationed at each site.

Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon said Sunday that residents were advised as early as Saturday to conduct pre-emptive evacuations, citing that many communities are located in danger zones, near rivers and lakes.

As of 10:00 a.m., a total of 2,756 have already moved to evacuation centers. This is expected to increase as more residents continue to evacuate.

“By this evening, as the typhoon intensifies until tomorrow, it’s possible that the number of evacuees will still increase,” he said.

Hot meals will be made available to evacuees, but Biazon noted that hygiene kits may be insufficient if the number of evacuees rises. He added that the city government will review where they can acquire additional supplies should the need arise.

“For the food packs, we intend to distribute them once they de-camp, so when they return to their homes, they’ll have something to bring with them. While in the evacuation center, our plan is to provide hot meals,” he added.
