Ambassador Endo Kazuya hosted a ceremony Monday to present the Foreign Minister’s Commendation to Dr. Nagai Hiroko, a distinguished professor and former director of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Social Sciences Japanese Studies Program.

Nagai, recognized as both a scholar and koto musician, was honored for her outstanding contributions to strengthening academic and cultural exchange between Japan and the Philippines.

During the event, Endo commended Nagai’s prolific career as a dedicated Philippine Studies scholar and decorated musical composer, noting her work has been recognized by some of the Philippines’ most prestigious award-giving bodies.

“Dr. Nagai’s work has truly enriched our countries’ friendship,” Endo said in his remarks. “As we approach the 70th Anniversary of our countries’ normalized relations, we look forward to her continued contributions: bringing our people closer through insightful lectures and compelling concerts.”

The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Japan Foundation Manila director Suzuki Ben, University of the Philippines Diliman College of Music Dean Dr. Ma. Patricia Brillantes Silvestre and Philippine Educational Theater Association president Melvin Lee.

The evening concluded with a koto performance by Nagai, who presented a rendition of Improvisation VII: Kaibuturan.
