The unlikely promoter: Quezon’s descendant and the biopic buzz

Butch Francisco

That Ricky Avancena, the grandson of Manuel L. Quezon, is hopping mad over the latest film depiction of the first President of the Philippine Commonwealth is understandable. No respectable person would want their ancestors to be put in a bad light, especially in a popular medium like film.

But then, modern historians now prefer to present eminent Filipinos not as demigods, but as real human beings. With feet of clay.

Since President Quezon lived in the 20th century, how his life unfolded was documented by the press. His personal affairs may not have seen print, but his contemporaries surely passed on tales about him – until all these colorful stories were published in books in the past few decades.

The most recent Quezon biopic may not have offered a lot of new information, but Avancena is still hurting — an understatement: He is ANGRY! Surely, it must have been the way the film was put together.

The irony of it all is that Avancena turned out to be the biggest advertiser of the movie! And he provided his services for free!

His public rants made the people curious about the movie. Now, everyone wants to see Quezon — thanks to its biggest drumbeater, Ricky Avancena.

TBA Studios, the producer of the film, should send him a nice present this Christmas. Maybe a poster of the movie Quezon — with the autograph of Jerrold Tarog, the film’s director.
