Remembering our dead, and those unjustly taken

Only through accountability can we properly honor the memory of the departed and prevent similar tragedies from recurring.

All Souls’ Day gives us an opportunity to remember our loved ones who have passed away, to honor their memory, and to pray for the eternal repose of their souls.

This is a time for reflection, compassion, and hope — that the souls of the departed find rest, and that justice is ultimately served to those who suffered and were taken from our midst unjustly.

Alongside our personal reflections of our beloved dead, we are likewise called to remember and pray for the thousands of victims whose deaths were caused by violence, neglect, and corruption — tragic realities that continue to haunt our nation.

Among these victims are the innocent lives lost during the bloody drug war waged in the former administration.

Critics estimate that tens of thousands of Filipinos — most of them poor, vulnerable, failed by the justice system — were extrajudicially killed in a campaign marred by abuse, impunity, and a blatant disregard for human rights.

Their souls, and our people, cry out for justice.

As we pray for their souls today, we must also pray for the strength to seek accountability, that those responsible for the heinous acts would be apprehended and held responsible under the law.

Simultaneously, we face another tragedy — one rooted in corruption and negligence in our public works sector.

Many Filipino lives have been lost or severely affected by catastrophic floods, which could have been prevented or minimized with proper infrastructure and honest governance.

Instead, many flood control projects were plagued by a culture of corruption — ghost projects with fake reports, sub-standard works, and funds misappropriated by greedy officials and their cohorts in government agencies, local governments, and private contractors.

As a result, floodwaters have claimed lives, destroyed homes, and devastated communities. The names of those who perished in these avoidable disasters should be remembered and mourned, especially as we confront the reality of systemic corruption that perpetuates such tragedies.

On this day of remembrance, we pray for the souls of all those who fell victim to violence and neglect, trusting that divine justice will prevail, even if human justice remains elusive at times.

Our prayers must also be accompanied by a call to action — an urgent plea for justice, accountability, and reform.

Corrupt officials, engaged in the deliberate misuse of funds meant for public safety and development, must be caught, prosecuted, and made to answer for their crimes.

Justice is not merely a moral obligation but a vital step towards healing a wounded nation and restoring public confidence in our institutions.

The path to justice requires courage — from the survivors, the families of victims, civil society, and honest government officials.

We must insist that our judicial system work free of bias, influence, and interference. We must demand transparency, meticulous investigation, and the firm enforcement of laws against corruption and human rights violations.

Only through accountability can we properly honor the memory of the departed and prevent similar tragedies from recurring.

As we pray for the souls of the dead today, let our prayers inspire us to be vigilant, compassionate, and relentless in our pursuit of justice.

May divine guidance strengthen the hands of those working within our justice system to uncover the truth and bring the guilty to face the consequences.

And may we, as a nation, commit to principles of righteousness and integrity — so that the future generations will not mourn lives lost through neglect and corruption, but celebrate lives lived justly and with dignity.

In this season of remembrance, let us hold steadfast to hope — hope that justice, peace, and moral uprightness will one day triumph over violence and greed.

Let us dedicate ourselves anew to building a nation where dignity and justice reign, and where the memories of our loved ones inspire us to uphold truth and righteousness.
