Security forces have confirmed that the ongoing armed confrontation in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan is linked to a rido or clan feud between rival groups from nearby barangays.
In a statement sent to Daily Tribune, the 11th Infantry Division and the 101st Infantry “Three Red Arrows” Brigade / Joint Task Group Basilan said the incident, which broke out early Tuesday morning, stemmed from long-standing local disputes.
The military clarified that the situation is not an organized rebellion or insurgent attack, but rather a localized conflict. Troops have been deployed to secure the poblacion area and surrounding barangays to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of residents.
“Our deployment aims to preserve peace and protect civilians. We are in close coordination with the Philippine National Police, local government units, and community leaders to restore normalcy,” the Army said.
Coordination, peace efforts underway
The Provincial Government of Basilan, led by Governor Mujiv Hataman, is working closely with the Basilan Council of Elders, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) leadership, and law enforcement agencies to de-escalate tensions.
Governor Hataman said the provincial government and the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCH) have been monitoring the situation since Monday night. He appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.
“We call for the rule of law and the cooperation of all residents. Our priority is to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace in the community,” Hataman said.
As a precaution, local officials have suspended classes and work in Tipo-Tipo until the situation stabilizes.
Commitment to peace
Authorities have appealed for restraint from all parties, stressing that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue and cooperation.
The Joint Task Force Orion reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining peace and stability in Basilan through unified efforts with local partners, traditional leaders, and peace stakeholders.
“We urge all groups involved to respect the ongoing peace process. Violence will not bring justice or progress to our communities,” military officials said.
As of this report, clearing operations are ongoing, and government troops remain on high alert to prevent the conflict from spreading to nearby municipalities.
